John Martin 1809-1861

 

This is the headstone of Dr. John Martin, my 3rd great grandfather who lived and died in Wales.  His son, my 2nd great grandfather, was the product of a fling that Dr. Martin had with his housekeeper.

 

Here is a little excerpt of a history written by Raymond Martin:

 

"John Martin, the husband of Anna Jenkins, was the son of Dr. John Martin of Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales.  He was a surgeon.  He was given a good education by his father even to lessons on the violin.  His mother was Mary Ann Gibbs. She and Dr. Martin never married.  She had been employed in Dr. Martin’s home.  She lived in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire but worked in Merthyr.

 

There is a possibility that Dr. John Martin died of pneumonia.  The Martins were mining engineers who came to that part of Wales from northern England.  One relative of his was the High Sheriff of Monmouthshire, a position considered very important over there at the time."

WW Stephens ranch house

The ranch house belonging to WW  and Alice Stephens when they lived in Blackfoot, Idaho.  Their property was between the Blackfoot and Snake Rivers - a beautiful, scenic place.

This photo dated 1924 is of Kim's grandparents holding his mother on an outing to a  beautiful pastoral setting in the hills above the city (probably Comber) in Ireland.  Christina is trying to offer a morsel of something to the goat as it was picketed out in the lush grass. 

Almira Cutler Raymond

Almira Cutler Raymond was Kim's 3rd great grandmother and it is through her ancestors that Kim's line goes back to William Bradford (pilgrim, Governor of Plymouth Colony and first Thanksgiving attendee).  Almira's father was Harmon Cutler - see his history in an earlier post.
 

 

 

She is not buried by her husband, William Wallace Raymond, most likely because she survived him for many years.  It's obvious that the headstone is newer and erected by descendants more recently. 

 

 

Catherine Davies (Davis) Wilson

What an amazing world we live in!!!!  A decendant of Catherine Davies (Davis) Wilson recently contacted me.  He is living in the UK and spotted my post on Robert Wilson on this humble little blog.  It was so exciting to be able to correspond!!  I'm guessing that we would be 4th cousins.  His family remained in England and he has been bitten by the family history bug.  He sent a copy of this obit.  Thanks so much, David!

Catherine was Robert Wilson's mother.  I must not have tumbled to the fact that she immigrated to America, because in my mind I thought that Robert was the first (and only) immigrant in his family, but several of his siblings also came.  Catherine was an early pioneer, but the Daughters of Utah Pioneers do not have a history written on her (here's an opportunity for someone).

The internet is a wonderful, marvelous tool for genealogists!!!!!
